Paper: Force Field Analysis (approximately 6 pages APA format)
The purpose of this assignment is for you to write about important social issue more deeply. In this assignment, you are writing a process. The force field analysis (FFA) is a systematic approach to understanding the root causes of a problem.
You will first construct an outline. The structure for this outline below. Your outline will be prefaced with about 2 paragraphs describing the overall social problem, as an introduction to the force field analysis. Steps 4-6 will be clarified and written out in about 4-6 paragraphs. Step 9 will be detailed and written out in about 2 paragraphs.
Choose a specific social problem and a specific population. The important part of this assignment is that you can ultimately demonstrate "the analytic process" itself. The chosen social problem is less important. This is not a research paper but a walk-through of a scholarly process of understanding a social problem. You can use demonstrate the FFA process through any social problem in any population.
A few social problems not allowed: teen pregnancy; binge/student drinking, and domestic violence. I am not saying these aren't social problems. I am saying they are too big for what you need to do.
You can choose something common or something unique and specific. For example, depression in casino floor workers in Atlantic City. Another wrote about high teacher turnover on Nantucket, MA. There are common choices too, such as homelessness in Nashua, NH. Tip: the paper will be easier, and you'll still get to demonstrate the process, if you choose something local and specific, with which you are already familiar because, again, it's not a research paper.
The FFA outline has 9 steps:
Step 1: Explicitly define what community or population is being considered
Step 2: Name the overall social problem in relation to the community being considered.
Step 3: List of causal factors at all levels of analysis (minimum 20 factors) What things contribute to this overall social problem? In practice as a consultant, you would gather this data from community members in some structured way, collaborating with them, keeping in mind that community members are indeed the true experts of their own situation and perspective. You would also conduct a literature review regarding this social problem. Make sure you list causal factors at multiple levels of analysis (individual-microsystem-organization-locality-macrosystem), and reference appropriate sources that support the inclusion of any causal factor which you donât think would be obvious. If uncertain, offer a reference.
Step 4: Choose a factor from all those you named in Step 3. This is the factor you will try to eliminate. Note your rationale for picking this factor. From this point on, your focus is on this one causal factor. In a way, itâs now âthe thing you hope to eliminateâ. This is how social change happens.
Step 5: Describe the current situation related to this one factor.
Step 6: Describe the ideal situation related to this one factor.
This is approximately the half-way point in your paper. Steps 4-6 are written in paragraph format to make it very clear what one single, specific causal factor you have chosen, along with your rationale for choosing the one that you did. This is the turning point in the analysis as well.
Step 7: List the driving forces at all levels of analysis (minimum 10 driving forces.). What are existing resources and conditions that are helpful, that push towards the ideal situation already? These are things that if enhanced would help to eliminate the one single chosen factor. Do not put in here any suggestions or âgood ideasâ. Driving forces point to things that currently exist in this community, little glimmers of hope which push toward the ideal situation of eliminating the single chosen factor.
